About The Club

The Franklin Woodturners Club Inc consists of a group of people who enjoy woodturning and working with wood. The Club was formed in November 1998 to promote and share the skills and experience of woodturning.

Today club membership is in excess of 50 members who come from the greater Franklin area. Members vary in ages from the young to the retired and from novice to experienced woodturners. They come from all walks of life, and are both males and females.

In 2008 members completed the building of a new clubroom in Collingwood Rd, Waiuku. The Clubroom is equipped with a number of lathes and a variety of woodturning equipment, and is set up to facilitate skills training and demonstrations. There is also a library and small shop of woodturning supplies for members use.

Aims And Objectives

While the main objective of the Club is to promote, foster and encourage the art and craft of woodturning, other aims include:

  • fostering and developing woodturning skills
  • cultivating an appreciation of the artistic aspects of woodturning and working with wood
  • providing a forum to share the skills and knowledge of all members

Club Activities

  • The Club meets every Thursday at 7pm at the Clubroom where Club updates and demonstrations are conducted either by Club members or visiting woodturners and guest speakers.
  • At the meetings, Club members are encouraged to bring recently made items for the ‘show and tell’ table.
  • Club visits to organisations and places of interest as well as visits by national and international demonstrators take place regularly.
  • The Clubrooms are open for members to use the lathes, etc. Before the weekly meetings and also on set weekends. These are also opportunities for skills development and training.
  • The Club participates in community projects when the opportunity arises and on an annual basis organises a display and sale of members work.
  • During the year Club members have the opportunity to attend training days, demonstrations and woodturning weekends held by clubs throughout the country.
